                              Ram
													GMPTags personell
were present on the day of the initial intake in
                              August 2006.

An initial number of 265 were graded and accepted
for the first phase of the Kenhardt Dorper Veld
                              Ram project.
													 The project co-ordinator
was Mr Boetie Burger from Brandvlei, Northern Cape
													Phase One:
It must be borne in mind
that these rams were all kept together in the same
paddocks for the duration of the test. Thus same
grass, same veterinary treatment, same management
                              principles applied.
													After 6 months in the
veld, only 168 of the 265 were left. Others either
died, or most were culled due to poor anatomical
                              characteristics.
													Thus an acceptance rate
                              of :
													168 / 265 = 63.3 % pass
rate w.r.t the selection criteria used by the
                              Dorper breeders society.
													Keep in mind that these
rams did not receive any extra nutrition or
                              pampering during this period.
													Phase two:
													The rams, now having an
average age of 13 - 15 months and weights ranging
between 70 to 90 kg were placed into an intensive
feedlot situation for the last month.
													Why feedlot the rams ?
The finisher phase for mutton in South Africa
utilises the feedlotting of sheep to add the right
amount of bone, protein and minimal fat
deposition. Sheep finished in this manner fetch
excellent prices from a very selective South
                              African meat protein consumer.

													Mutton is not purely
utilised for its nutritional value but also for
its good taste experience. Often enjoyed on a
traditional open fire "braai", known as a barbeque
                              in other countries.
